No quilt shops are closing around me. But newer stores are for the sewist and quilter. At least, their classes are including several clothing and tote bag offerings.
Keep us informed on the Modern Quilt Guild front. Hope you keep up with that. I really enjoy my group in Minneapolis.

I think it is worldwide too. I'm in Canada and we have had two shops close in the last year. For one, the owner was retiring. I don't know why the other one closed. Online shops are an issue, especially in Canada. The shops had traditionally priced the fabric at about double the American price. Many did not come down as the Canadian dollar increased in value as compared to the US. Now, we're at par, and shipping from the US can be cheap. And many Canadian shops are still selling at $12 - $16 / metre (39 inches).

The other issue, I think, is the trend to online tuturials and videos. When I started quilting (only 13 years ago), you could get a book and teach yourself, or you could take a class at your LQS. If you took a class, you usually bought your supplies and fabric at the same shop. Now, you can watch a video on any technique you want to learn, and buy your fabric online - there is no need to set foot in a store!

I think it's a worldwide trend, not just a national one. Here in my area of Australia, I can think of three LQS that have closed in the last twelve months or so. I attend classes at one of my LQS, they are lovely women and the teacher is great, but they don't "get me" nor do they carry much of the kind of fabrics I might want to buy. That being said, I have to admit that I buy a most of my fabric at the chain store, so if the LQS in my area close, I am partially responsible.

Wardrobe basics
Skirt black for winter and tan or light grey for summer. Solid color tops that go with either skirt. A sweater or jacket that goes with both skirts. Then change it up with bright scarves and earrings & or necklaces.

For the MQG bring a book that has timeless techniques. Every quilter values that.

I spent the day immersed in quilting. Went to Michigan State's Quilt Museum and got some great quilting history. Went on a shop hop on the way back home. Great fun!

OMG. If I put a list of the podcasts I listen to up next to yours, I look like SUCH a slacker geek. My podcast list has computer gaming podcasts (er...5 or 6 of them), Disney podcasts, Mommy podcasts, Scrapbooking podcasts, Tech podcasts, and a handful of misplaced movie, forecasting, and morning show podcasts...because those are from the same gaming guy whom I think is funny. So I listen to his on-gaming podcast.
