Episode 51 – Modern Quilters Speak out

Have you seen the article in Quilter’s Newsletter about modern quilting? The article is a Q&A format with 5 well-known modern quilters. In this episode I gave my (hopefully not painfully controversial) answers to the same questions. Remember these are just my opinions and I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings! It is my overall opinion that no matter what you call it, if you are quilting, then you are awesome.

Also I received a Major Award! Ashley from the Film in the Fridge blog gave away a chance to take an online quilting class with Angela Walter at Craftsy. And guess who won? Moi! I’m so excited. The name of the class is “Machine Quilting Negative Space” and is available for $29.99. Has anyone taken a Craftsy class before? I did one class at Quilt University but it was a math for quilters class and I have to admit that I kinda lost motivation for it after the first class or two.

Hi Kelley, Angela Walters’ craftsy class is awesome! I took it in about 2 days. I love the craftsy classes, the videos are very good professional quality and you can take notes as you’re watching to go back to them later. I’m doing the BOM with Amy which is free and also took a machine quilting class with Wendy Butler Berns. Hope you’ll like your class!

Thanks for your kind comments about my comments :)

I am a Traditional Quilter, as it were, but I appreciate the Modern Quilters for bringing energetic voices to the craft. I believe, whole-heartedly, that there is room for everyone.

    All the best.

PERSONALLY I like the majority of MODERN QUILTS … new block patterns or the traditional patterns done in a new innovative colorway, style. … My favorite Modern Quilters are Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle (have all their books)… I love their use of color and geometric style of blocks. To me their minimalistic style is beautiful. I love most quilts but especially admire quality workmanship … regardless if the quilt is modern/ art or traditional.

As for using the internet… I think the most is where a person is in their life as to whether or not they use the internet… Young women who work or are stay at home moms do not have the time / schedule to be able to go to meeting. Also I think older quilters tend to intimidate instead of teach the younger quilters. I see them treating them as if they are their daughters instead of as students wanting to learn. (This is based on what I have seen; by no means universal.)

Like you said some people have always used the internet for communication; others do not use or understand the method of communication. I think that the internet tends to waste of lot of your time. Pinterest is one place THAT waste time, as much as I LOVE PINTEREST. … I spend way too much sewing time there.

In all I think Modern QUILTERS share their love of quilting via blogs / twitter and other internet media. I love all the quilting classes that are available as I can no longer get quilting on TV.
