SMS’s 2010 reflections

I saw this thread over on Sew Mama, Sew and I just found it very interesting.  What do you think?  What are the trends of this past year and the coming year?

Looking back on the sewing scene of 2010, what trends stand out in your mind?

From browsing around on the internet, I’d say some trendy things are…owls and/or birds, turquoise and red,  use of a collection of fabrics together (vs. mixing up the bag,) the use of solids, the use of white as a background, and random but straight-line quilting.

What were some of your favorite things? (Trends, fabric collections, patterns, blogs? Whatever you really loved.)

I really love Elizabeth Hartman’s blog and though Santa did not bring me her book I would still love to have it.  I also love Sara Fielke’s blog and I did get her new book Material Obsession 2.  I’ll be talking about it on an upcoming episode but suffice it to say that you should go buy one.  Right now.  I’ll wait.  I love the use of white as a background.  It looks so clean and sharp to me.  I don’t have a favorite fabric collection since I don’t really stash.

What was your very favorite fabric collection or print? (If not listed above.)

As stated above, I don’t really have one.  I wouldn’t mind getting some of the new Amy Butler collection, though.

What was the best thing you made in 2010? (Be sure to share a photo!)

The best quilt I completed was given away as a baby shower gift and I sadly have no photo.  The Husband’s quilt should fall here but since it isn’t complete I am not counting it as a 2010 item.  I think the best non-quilt thing I made though was the coats for the kiddos.

Our new mom-made coats!

What is one of the best things you saw that was made by someone else?

Oh that is hard.  I can’t even begin to choose.

What do you think 2011 has in store? (Again, trends, fabric, patterns, etc.)

Well what I really want is for hand piecing and hand quilting to be widely known as an awesome and wonderful pastime.  I think though that the white background + simple graphical shapes formula will continue it’s dominance for another year or two.  I think trendy fabric will still have bright happy colors.

Anything you’re ready for the sewing world to get over?

Hmm.  I guess there are some things that don’t need to be covered with cozies.  But at least the cozies are cute.

What’s on your sewing agenda for 2011? What are you excited about? What would you like to learn more about?

I’m excited to just get started!  I have so many things I want to make and not enough time to make them.  I love learning new techniques and I am really digging making up patterns from my own designs.  I really hope to have an explosion of things created in that area.  Sadly I think it means that some well-loved projects will take on UFO status because I just don’t have time to do everything.

I guess the fact that I had the baby’s picture professionally taken wrapped in the quilt and sent you a copy didn’t count? Ok…well since Santa got me a camera for Christmas, I’ll see if I can take a picture of the quilt. Course, then you might have to wait for me to find time to learn how to get photos off the new camera!

Well of course that counted…but I figured you don’t want a pic of your baby on the internet since you haven’t posted one of her yourself!!!
