The Husband bought me an awesome gift for Christmas – a sewing table! But he had the hardest time buying one. Why? Quilt shop employees. D’oh.
He ended up buying it at Joann’s, which isn’t bad, but a local quilt shop lost the sale because they were rude to The Husband. Sigh. Quilt shop owners, take heart! It isn’t only quilters that come into your shop to spend money. The Husband will never shop at the lqs for me again and I will probably only do so in a pinch (or until my current gift certificates run out.) How sad for them…that could be literally thousands of dollars lost over the years. I am tentatively saving for a new machine and now I know where I definitely won’t be buying it. Tsk tsk. It wasn’t like he was just buying a handful of fat quarters. He was willing to spend hundreds of dollars…and got snubbed! Though being rude to a customer spending any amount of money is inexcusable.
Have a listen…I hope you had a wonderful 2010, and that 2011 is even better!!!

Your husband is so, so very thoughtful. The cabinet is great! I would go back into the shop like on the movie Pretty Woman and just taught the ladies by telling them all about the sale they lost due to their rudeness and then walk out of the store.
Oh that’s beautiful! I can’t wait to see it! Where did you put it though?
That is too bad that your husband was treated badly. You are absolutely right that they should realize most every man that come in there is connected to a quilter (or may be a quilter themselves!). My favourite quilt shop, which is now, sadly, closed down, had staff that treated the men wonderfully. In fact, they were usually quite delighted to see a man, which tended to embarrass my DH. I usually went in there on Saturdays, and inevitably, there would be some guy coming in wanting to buy canvas to build a truck cover, or to ask if they hem jeans, or some “dumb” question. The staff were always polite and tried to help them find the right place for their needs. Darn, I miss that store!

Hi Kelley,
I finally caught up on your podcasts and I was really sorry to hear that your husband had a bad experience. My LQS has a chair with several guy magazines for waiting husbands. I have never seen them be rude to anyone.
On the other hand, another LQS has a horrible woman who owns it and she is a major quilt snob. She is extremely rude to anyone who hasn’t taken quilt classes and makes beginners feel useless. Needless to say, I don’t go there anymore.
I haven’t listened to your other podcast yet but I am looking forward to it.
Corinne.
How awesome is your husband? That table is wonderful.
Sorry to hear he had a bad time at the store. Nothing ruins a store for me more than bad service. Glad he found what he wanted at another location.
